Complete Piercing Aftercare Guide: Nose, Lip, Eyebrow, Ear & Cartilage

Getting a new piercing is exciting — whether it's your nose, lip, eyebrow, or ear piercings. But what comes after is just as important. Proper aftercare ensures your piercing heals well and avoids unnecessary infections or complications.

At Dudo's Tattoos, we don't just offer clean and professional piercings — we guide you through the healing process with honest care and support.

Here's a breakdown of essential aftercare tips based on different types of piercings and how we assist you.

Nose Piercing

I know about different piercings. First, I will tell you about nose piercing. Nose piercing aftercare is straightforward.

  • Every alternate day or every two days, clean it gently with a raw earbud.

  • Do not rotate your piercing for at least two months.

  • Do not disturb the piercing — if you do, healing may be delayed.

  • Let it heal naturally.

You should wait at least 8 to 10 weeks before changing your jewellery. Nose piercings usually take 5 to 6 months to heal completely. So be careful during the initial days — especially while washing your face or rubbing it with a towel. Pulling or pressure may lead to infection or an allergy.

So, be gentle and take care.

Lip Piercing

Some people are interested in lip piercing. If you're getting pierced there, remember:

  • Wait 8 weeks to 10 months before changing jewellery.

  • Drink plenty of fluids.

  • Avoid smoking if you are a regular smoker.

  • Be very careful while brushing your teeth — in the initial days, the brush might hit the stud.

There are chances that the lip piercing can get pulled or injured during brushing. This may lead to delayed healing or infection. So, be extra cautious in the beginning.

Also:

  • Do not apply anything externally.

  • The mouth is naturally moist and produces lubrication, so there's no need for ointments.

  • This is all about lip piercing. Let it heal naturally.

Eyebrow Piercing

Eyebrow piercing is recommended to change jewellery only after 8 to 10 weeks. Healing takes about 20 to 22 weeks, or around 5 to 6 months.

Just like with nose or lip piercings, remember how parents get their child's ears pierced — they all need time to heal.

In the initial 8 to 10 weeks, be very careful:

  • Put a drop of ghee every alternate day before bed.

  • Keep checking your piercing every 3 to 5 days.

What happens is, your body releases fluids. If you don't clean the area, it can store bad cholesterol and lead to infection. This is because bacteria may form around that spot.

So:

  • Keep an eye on your piercing.

  • Clean it if you notice any body fluids or dirt on the stud.

  • Use lukewarm water and saline water for cleaning.

Ear & Cartilage Piercing Aftercare

These take longer — around 8 months to 1 year to fully heal:

  • Wait 10 to 12 weeks before changing jewellery.

  • Avoid sleeping directly on the pierced side.

  • Be mindful while combing hair, wearing clothes, masks, or helmets.

  • Keep your phone away from new cartilage piercings during calls.

Our experienced artists at Dudo's Tattoos will inform you of all dos and don'ts, especially for cartilage piercings. You'll receive printed and verbal instructions, and we're just a call away if anything feels off.

General Precautions

Avoid going to the beach after getting a piercing. Beach water contains salt, which can cause infection. Better to avoid it for 5 to 6 months.

Avoid swimming training in the early healing phase.

Certain foods must be avoided — because they can cause swelling or "cheemu" (local irritation/infection). Avoid: Pickles, Oily foods

If you experience any infection, allergy, swelling, or cheemu, here's what to do:

Consult your piercing artist — A good artist will have a prescription or aftercare solution ready.

If you still have doubts or the issue continues, visit a doctor.

At Dudo's Tattoos, we offer complete aftercare support. We listen, observe, and guide you on the right way to heal — no matter the piercing.
