Tattoo Aftercare Tips | Dudo's Tattoos Client Care Guide
Many tattoo artists don't explain proper aftercare in detail. Some may just apply the tattoo and send you off, without offering much guidance. Whether it's due to inexperience or carelessness, this often leads to problems during the healing phase.
The Healing Timeline
Tattoo healing typically takes 30 to 45 days, depending on your skin type and lifestyle. Here's what happens during that time:
First 15 Days: Scabbing Phase
The tattooed skin forms a scab, which is entirely normal. This is the body's natural response to any skin injury. A scab is a protective crust made of dried blood and fluids that helps new skin regenerate underneath.
Like any wound, the scab eventually dries and falls off. But during this period, many people experience itching. If you scratch it or peel the scab, you risk pulling away ink along with the dead skin. That's why some tattoos end up with faded colors or patchy spots.
Why Some Tattoos Fade Quickly
A tattoo can fade fast if:
The artist doesn't apply the ink properly.
You scratch or peel the healing skin.
The tattoo isn't cared for properly after being done.
Inexperienced artists may also advise wrong aftercare, like applying coconut oil, which is not recommended. A better choice is using a proper moisturizer or recommended ointment, which some studios offer separately.

Activity Guidance
We'll tell you when to avoid gyms, jogging, sweating, swimming, or sunlight — and when it's safe to resume.
Loose Clothing Tip
We advise clients to wear soft, breathable clothing after the tattoo to avoid rubbing and itching.
Sun Protection Tips
The sun is the biggest enemy of a healing tattoo. We recommend staying away from direct sunlight and later using sunblock for protection.
What to Avoid During Healing
To protect your tattoo and allow proper healing, avoid the following:
Swimming pools: Public pools often contain urine, chlorine, and bacteria, which can infect the tattoo.
Heavy physical activity: Avoid running, workouts, and sweating for at least 2 weeks, especially until scabbing is over.
Tight cloth: Wear loose, soft clothing over the tattoo. Tight clothes may rub against the skin, causing irritation or delayed healing.
Regular soaps: Use only antibacterial soap. Regular soaps can cause reactions.
Direct sunlight: The sun is the tattoo's biggest enemy during healing. Stay out of the sun for the first 4–6 weeks. After that, use sunblock to protect the tattoo.
When to Check the Tattoo
After the scabbing phase (around 15 days), your skin may look light or uneven. This is normal. Don't judge the tattoo too early. Wait 45 days to see the final result.
If the tattoo still looks faded or patchy after that, consult your artist. A professional studio usually offers free touch-ups within 45 to 60 days. Commercial studios might charge, so always check their policy before getting inked.
Final Thought
Healing a tattoo is 50% the artist's work and 50% your responsibility. Even the best tattoo will heal poorly if not cared for correctly.
Some people may also notice pus or irritation in specific body parts, depending on their skin type and food habits. If unsure, ask your tattoo artist what to avoid. If they can't guide you, they may lack experience.
